The hard questions

You've probably asked yourself some of these already.

  • Will my Social Security or pension be enough?

Most residence visas ask for a minimum monthly income, and daily costs swing a lot between countries. We put your income next to each visa's requirement and next to living costs for your household, so you see both before you get attached to a place.

  • Medicare won't follow you.

Medicare generally doesn't pay for care outside the U.S. Each country's healthcare overview covers how foreign residents get care and insurance, and your checklist tells you when to have coverage in place.

  • The country you love may have no visa for you.

Some popular countries have no retirement visa at all. We check visas first. A country with no pathway for your goal is marked Low Fit, with the reason and a link to the official immigration site.

  • Apostilles, bank accounts, insurance…

Your checklist lists the documents, who issues each one, and when to start, counted back from your move date. Banking and healthcare overviews cover what foreigners usually need to open an account or get insured.

  • What if I choose the wrong place?

Compare countries side by side, then test your top pick with the scouting trip planner. When you get home, it asks whether the country still fits, before you spend money on the move.

  • Leaving family behind is hard.

No website fixes that, and we won't pretend otherwise. Each travel overview shows flight times back to major U.S. cities, the community puts you in touch with people who've moved, and a scouting trip lets you and your family try a place first.

How it works

Visas first, then money, then how you want to live.

For Americans moving abroad, a beautiful country you can't get a visa for isn't an option, so that's where we start.

  1. Step 1

    Tell us your goal

Living on your income, bringing remote work, getting hired, studying, investing or following family roots, plus your income, budget and who's moving with you.

  2. Step 2

    Visa options come first

Each country's visa options are checked against your goal and the income you entered. A country without a pathway for your goal is marked Low Fit, with the reason and the official link.

  3. Step 3

We check them against your budget

Living costs for your household, from livingcost.org data, are compared with the monthly budget you gave us.

  4. Step 4

We rank what's left by how you want to live

Healthcare, safety, climate, internet, community and your other priorities set the order, with a High, Medium or Low Fit label.

Then we help you get there

  • Checklists that work like a project plan, with each task dated back from your move date.
  • A scouting trip planner that ends by asking whether the country still fits.
  • Country overviews that list their sources and the date they were checked.
  • A Provider Network: request a match with a vetted provider for immigration, tax, real estate, insurance or relocation help.

Why we built this

Built by a family that made the move.

  • Jerrode, Co-founder

    Jerrode, Co-founder

  • Brittney, Co-founder

    Brittney, Co-founder

When Jerrode first suggested moving abroad, Brittney's first thought was: where could we possibly live besides the US? So they made a list: warm weather all year, beaches and mountains, good schools for their kids, a stable government, a beautiful culture, easy access to the US, and a cost of living no higher than at home. Months of browser tabs, forums, YouTube videos and two scouting trips later, the Dominican Republic checked every box for their family.

Horizon Atlas started as a guide to the DR. Then they realized the country that was right for them wouldn't be right for everyone. So they built one place to compare countries against your own priorities, with current info, and a team to help you make the move. The platform is named after their son, Atlas.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Americans who are seriously thinking about moving abroad: retirees, remote workers, families, people moving for a job or school, and anyone with family roots in another country. The visa information is written for U.S. citizens.

It depends on which visas you could qualify for, what you can spend each month and what matters most to you. A Move Pass shows a Fit label (High, Medium or Low Fit) for every country you compare, personalized to you. It's general guidance: confirm visa details at the official government site.

Yes, to start. You can read every one of our 50 country profiles, get 2 recommended countries with a fit label, save and compare up to 2 countries, join the community, ask the Atlas Guide 5 questions, and request a match through the Provider Network. A Move Pass adds the planning tools.

Unlimited saved countries, the full reasoning in Decisions, locking in your country, up to 50 Atlas Guide questions a day, and the Actions tools: budget, checklist, travel and logistics, the scouting trip planner and Global Essentials. It's one payment of $9.99 for 30 days, $14.99 for 60 days or $19.99 for 90 days. It doesn't renew on its own, and buying another pass adds time to what you have left. All Move Pass purchases are final.

Yes, you're welcome to explore. Keep in mind that our visa overviews, and checklist steps like apostilles and U.S. tax filing, are written for U.S. citizens, so the rules for your passport may be different.

Visas come first: we check each country for a visa that fits your goal and the income you entered, and a country without one is marked Low Fit with the reason. Then we compare living costs for your household with your budget. Then your priorities, like healthcare, safety and climate, set the order. A country we don't have visa data for is never recommended.

Cost of living figures come from livingcost.org. Safety levels come from the U.S. State Department. Everything else is an AI-generated overview written with Google Search, showing the sources it used and the date they were checked. It's general guidance, not legal advice: confirm visa details at the official government site, and get legal, immigration and tax advice from a licensed professional.
